Bucs Take 3‑2 Lead in Series as Haddix Beats Yankees, 5‑2

New York, Oct. 10 — Elroy Face, the little man with the rubber arm and a heart of chilled steel, once again silenced the mighty Yankee bats Monday afternoon, steering the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5‑2 victory and a 3‑2 edge in the World Series before 62,753 fans at Yankee Stadium.

The Pirates, who had been battered in two earlier games, jumped ahead in the second inning and never looked back. Dick Stuart opened with a single, Gino Cimoli followed with a fielder’s choice, and Smoky Burgess lashed a double down the right‑field line. Don Hoak’s grounder brought Cimoli home when Tony Kubek’s relay throw was dropped by Gil McDougald, and Bill Mazeroski’s high‑hopping double sent Burgess and Hoak racing across the plate for a 3‑0 lead.

The Yankees answered with a run in the second as Elston Howard doubled and scored on two infield outs, but the Bucs struck again in the third when Dick Groat’s double and Roberto Clemente’s single made it 4‑1. Roger Maris narrowed the gap with a towering homer into the upper right‑field stands, but Harvey Haddix, pitching with heart and precision, held firm until the seventh.

When the Yankees threatened with singles by Kubek and pinch‑hitter Hector Lopez, manager Danny Murtaugh waved frantically for Face, and the little right‑hander trotted in from the bullpen to douse the fire. He forced Lopez at second, then struck out Maris on a low inside pitch. The Pirates added an insurance run in the ninth when Burgess singled, Bob Cerv fumbled in left, and Joe Christopher, running for Burgess, scored on Hoak’s single after a wild pitch by Ryne Duren.

Face, cool as ever, set the Yankees down in order in the ninth, fanning Berra in his record 66th Series game. The victory belonged to Face, whose seventh‑inning rescue drew a roar of admiration from the sun‑splashed crowd.

The Pirates, now one win away from their first championship since 1925, will send Bob Friend against either Whitey Ford or Bob Turley when the Series resumes Wednesday in Pittsburgh.
