Reds Defeat Dodgers, 4–3, on Dotterer’s Grand Slam
Cincinnati Manages Only Three Hits but Makes Them Count; Sherry Homers Twice for Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES, June 10 — The Cincinnati Reds made the most of their limited hitting Friday night at the Coliseum, using a second‑inning grand‑slam home run by Dutch Dotterer to edge the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4–3, before 22,271 fans.
Cincinnati collected only three hits all evening, but Dotterer’s drive over the left‑field screen proved enough to secure the club’s fifth straight victory over Los Angeles this season.
The Dodgers, meanwhile, received all their scoring from two home runs by Norm Sherry but were unable to overcome the early deficit.
Koufax Struggles in Second Inning
Sandy Koufax opened the game by striking out the side in the first, but the second inning unraveled quickly. He walked Frank Robinson, then saw Lee Walls force Robinson at second. Walks to Jones and Bell loaded the bases.
Dotterer, facing Koufax for the first time in the game, drove a belt‑high fastball over the screen for a grand slam. It was his second home run of the season — both hit in Los Angeles.
Ed Palmquist relieved Koufax and held Cincinnati scoreless the rest of his outing.
Purkey Steady Until Late
Bob Purkey kept the Dodgers off the board until the seventh, when Sherry hit the first of his two home runs. Purkey allowed only one hit through the first four innings and retired nine straight at one point.
Los Angeles threatened in the fifth, loading the bases on singles by Howard and Sherry and a pinch‑hit single by Essegian. But Gilliam flied to Walls to end the inning.
Purkey walked Gilliam in the eighth, then allowed a single to Moon. Bill Henry relieved him and retired Demeter to end the threat.
Dodgers Fall Short in Ninth
Jim Brosnan took over in the ninth after Sherry’s second home run made it 4–3. With two men on base and two out, Brosnan struck out Charley Neal to end the game.
Defensive and Pitching Notes
- Palmquist retired seven straight Reds after entering in the second.
- McDevitt held Cincinnati hitless in the sixth and seventh.
- Purkey improved to 5–2, while Koufax fell to 1–8.
- Cincinnati’s only hits were Dotterer’s homer and singles by Howard and Essegian.
Game Summary
The Dodgers outhit Cincinnati but could not overcome the early four‑run deficit. Sherry’s two home runs accounted for all Los Angeles scoring, but the club left several runners stranded in key situations.
